Today's word
processing software does an
adequate job creating page layouts and typeset files that can often
be considered 'camera ready'. Unfortunately, when trying to work
with manuscript length files many problems can arise. Printers, both
offset and digital, prefer files composed in publishing software for
good reason—the chance of glitches are much less. Working from
properly prepared PDF files decrease those chances even more.
Novel Type & Design can convert your word file into books that
printers love. Our knowledge of typesetting and design makes sure
that your readers will love them, too. Though design is often
considered a matter of taste, there are rules in book design that
are necessary. Here are a few:
 |
A
line of type greater than five inches in length is difficult
to read. |
 |
When reading printed books, serif typefaces
(those
with feet)
lead your eye across
the page. This is less true when reading on screens, in
fact, a serif face that is too flowery is very difficult to
read online. EBooks can use serif faces, but they should be
set in a larger point size type and greater than usual
leading (the space between the lines). |
 |
Consider the gutter. Books bound with a small gutter between
pages are difficult to read and often end up with broken
spines because readers are forced to bend them almost flat.
|
These are
only a few of the things considered when producing a
book. We can solve those and many other problems. For most authors,
the biggest concern is money. Let us give you an economical
alternative to big type and design houses.
